Legal name now required on all motor vehicle titles

The Alabama State Legislature passed Act 2015-362, effective October 1, 2015, which requires all motor vehicles to be titled in their owners’ legal names. This means if an owner’s legal name has changed because of marriage, divorce, adoption, or personal choice, the name on his or her title must be changed to match the new legal name. This law applies even if an owner has a lienholder through which his or her car (or other motor vehicle) is financed. Local Revenue Commission or Licensing Official offices will have documentation owners may use to request their titles from their lienholders.
