In observance of Juneteenth 2023, all Alabama State offices and local Cullman County offices will be closed on Monday, June 19. Juneteenth, an abbreviation for “June nineteenth,” commemorates the effective end of slavery in America when US General Gordon Granger delivered a federal proclamation in Galveston, Texas.
Texas became the first U.S. state to make Juneteenth an official holiday in 1979, and Juneteenth became an official federal holiday in 2021.
